Historical geographical names are the unified appellation of geographical entities in specific historical locations or spatial extents in a specific historical period. They are important cultural heritages left over from history. Most of the research on historical geographical names is carried out from the perspective of history or culture. However, there are few studies on the temporal and spatial characteristics of historical geographical names, especially the study of the temporal and spatial characteristics of historical geographical names with clear scales on the millennium scale, large scale and spatial extent. On the one hand, the reason is due to the lack of historical geographical names data, and on the other hand, the existing spatiotemporal data model may be relatively complicated for historical geographical names, and it is not efficient in expression or computation.Based on the results of the existing spatiotemporal model, this paper proposes a relational data model with the spatiotemporal form sequence, named as spatiotemporal form model. The model is proposed according to the rule of the geographical name area changing with time, which mainly includes two important data objects, the spatiotemporal form set of the geographical name regions and the spatiotemporal form set of the geographical name sub-regions.The sub-regions of geographical names are independent regions in time and space and are the largest subset of the geographical name regions. The spatiotemporal form set of geographical name regions can support spatiotemporal analysis based on geographical name regions very well,And the spatiotemporal form set of geographical name sub-regions can supports location-based spatiotemporal analysis of geographical names as well. Two toolbox were developed based on the spatiotemporal form model in this paper, one is named spatiotemporal date precessing toolbox, and the other named spatiotemporal analysising toolbox. The data processing toolbox mainly solves the data I/O problem between raster data and vector data and geographical name spatiotemporal form model. The geographical name spatiotemporal analysis toolbox mainly surves the analysis and mining of spatiotemporal data based on geographical names.Taking the time series data of the historical prepecture areas of the Chinese Historical Geographic Information System(CHGIS)V6 as the case data,475 prefecture names in the data set from 206 B.C.to 1911 A.D.were selected as the research objects, for the case area and all the prefectures involved.Deep and extensive spatiotemporal analysis was made with all the prefecture names. The results indicate that:(1)The spatiotemporal form model of geographical names can effectively deal with spatiotemporal geographical name data, and it is easy to develop relevant spatiotemporal data management and analysis tools.(2)The spatiotemporal form model of geographical names is simple structured, low redundancy of data, compatible with both vector and raster data, high portability, and convenient for spatiotemporal analysia.(3)The differences in spatial and temporal distribution of prefecture names in case area is distinct, the surface topography played a main role in the space, and are greatly affected by the dynasty on the time.(4)The prefecture names experienced spatiotemporal changing frequently in 2117 years, and most of their spatiotemporal stability is low.The prefecture name with long survival life developed a distinct core area of the name in general.(5)Geographical name's spatiotemporal body and spatiotemporal volume are visual indicators for the quantitative expression of the historical geographical name's growing scale.
