In the early 21st Century, urban rail transit taking the metro as the representative develops rapidly in China, while more and more metro hubs are formed in central areas of large cities. The implantation in built environment of the hubs has changed people's flow mode and life style, which makes existing pedestrian system based on car traffic face adaptive problems under the new situation in the aspects of efficiency, order and vitality.Either TOD or the walking theories fail to give pertinent and systematized solutions to the problems of special stage and area.Taking the theories related to public transport and walking as its foundation, the adaptation concept as its visual angle, and pedestrian system in hub areas as its research object, this paper tries to propose adaptation theory and method system of pedestrian system in hub areas combined with the empirical researches on Chinese Mainland cities and high density Asian cities. There are differences in the degree of metro hub development among Chinese Mainland cities, but on the whole the spatial environment in hub areas is in the stage of transformation.Through the comparative analysis of the structure and spatial environment of pedestrian system in Xujiauhi Hub,Xinjiekou Hub and Xi'anlu Hub areas, and the tracking investigation of passengers' flow line of Xi'anlu Hub,this paper points out that the problems of pedestrian system in hub areas can be attributed to four aspects of adaptive relationship:human Line and car Line, external and internal, traffic and life, planning and development. And in the research on high density Asian cities, this paper analyzes the three typical modes of pedestrian system, taking Umeda Hub of Osaka.Central Hub of Hong Kong and City Hall Hub of Sigapore as examples, and reveals the logic of structure, function, place and process in their adaptation development through lateral comparison.Based on the judgment of adaptation relationship and development logic of pedestrian system in hub areas, this paper introduces the adaptation concept and establishes the adaptation theory system of pedestrian system in hub areas. The theoretical explanations of multiple essence and adaptive elements of pedestrian system in hub areas are made, and the three dimensions of structural adaptability, functional adaptability and quality adaptability are proposed, while the hierarchy and corresponding principles are discussed. In the structural dimension, the principles are high efficiency weaving of path network and organic coupling of nodes system;in the functional dimension, the principles are universality in terms of time andspace and coordination of dynamic and static uses;in the quality dimension, the principles are multi-dimensional and participatory and identity characteristic and imaginable. The adaptation problems of pedestrian system in hub areas need to be solved by urban design,so taking the adaptation principles as the guidance, and corresponding to the problems of efficiency, order and vitality, based on the urban design goals, this paper proposes the three strategies of interlayer link, relation integration and nodes activation as well as their specific operation modes. In order to guarantee effective implementation of urban design strategies, this paper finally discussed the ways to establish urban design guidence system for pedestrian system in hub areas, from the aspects of baisc principle, contents series, regulations construction, organization and operation, thus a complete adaptation method system of pedestrian system in hub areas is formed.
