In recent years,owing to the environmental change and human activity’s interference,the outbreaks of algae blooms with microcystin release,and sudden pollutions in drinking water sources occurred frequently in some parts of China.In addition,ship’s drinking water pollutions,such as bacteria and algae contamination,caused by water sources pollution and long storage time become more and more serious.Currently,the main disinfection technology for drinking water is Chlorine.It is apt to produce disinfection by-products and cause second pollution,which threaten to human’s life health.Therefore,it is urgent to develop a complete set of technologies and equipment that can effectively respond to the sudden pollution of drinking water,so as to ensure the quality and safety of drinking water.Advanced oxidation technology has the advantages of fast reaction rate,strong oxidizing ability,and no or less pollution,which has wide applications in water treatment.However,most of the traditional advanced oxidation technologies are still in the stage of laboratory research.Their large-scale applications are difficult to achieve due to the low concentration and small production of hydroxyl radicals,as well as the high cost and explosion problems caused by adding hydrogen peroxide.Concerning with the national demands in protecting drinking water safety,this paper mainly focuses on the mechanism research of a developed advanced oxidation technology(reactive oxygen species in collaborating with hydrodynamic cavitation),and its application in drinking water treatment.In this research,reactive oxygen species were generated by atmospheric strong electric field discharge,and the solution of reactive oxygen radical containing high concentration of hydroxyl radicals was formed by the reactions of oxygen active species and water under the effect of hydrodynamic cavitation.The generating mechanism of hydroxyl radicals during this process was studied.In addition,the bench-scale and pilot-scale experiments of treating drinking water were conducted with the developed technology,moreover a production trial of drinking water was carried out for high algae-laden water source,to establish a novel drinking water treatment process based on reactive oxygen species and hydrodynamic cavitation.Experimental results demonstrates that the combination of reactive oxygen species with hydrodynamic cavitation is a fast and effective technology for drinking water treatment.Based on the synergy between reactive oxygen species and hydrodynamic cavitation,the chemical reaction in water treatment can be strengthened,while the mass transfer coefficient between reactive oxygen species and water could reach 10.73 s-1.Moreover,the production of hydroxyl radicals can be promoted,of which the steady state concentration was as high as 6.52×10-10 mol/L.As a result,the non-selective,efficient and rapid killing of algae and bacteria,as well as degrading organic matter and some inorganic substances in water could be achieved.The relative qualities of water after treatment can meet the national standard(GB5749-2006),while no disinfection by-products were detected.The developed advanced oxidation technology based on reactive oxygen species and hydrodynamic cavitation is a high-efficiency and safety technology for drinking water treatment,which has the advantages in high concentration of OH generation,high yield of reactive oxygen radical solution production,effective and safe water treatment in a short time,and no disinfection by-products formation.The developed technology can break through the traditional disinfectant limit using in ship’s drinking water treatment,improve the rapid response capacity for the sudden pollution of drinking water,and provide a new technology for ships’ and towns’ drinking water treatment.
