Garden, also known as "Garden Pavilion" or "Pavilion Garden",is said to be "Every garden with pavilions" or "No garden without pavilions".It is clearly evident that pavilion plays a key role in Chinese classical garden. Thus in-depth research of pavilion is an indispensable part of classical garden research.Academic discussion on the architectual methods of pavilion in Ming and Qing Dynasties is currently systematic and perfect. However, correlational research from the 10th to 14th century - because of limited pavilion cases in this specified period-is less involved. Then the main purpose of this dissertation is to monographic study on the shortage. The research is based on comparison and analysis of the three materials—the first material is relevant texts in Li Mingzhong's Yingzao Fashi;the second is 20 pavilion cases in Jin and Yuan Dynasties, combined with a few cases in Ming Dynasty;the third is nealy 40 cases in paintings depicting detailed and highly realistic. These dissertation includes three parts as following:Part 1,Overall generalization:determine the architectual type, the timber grade, and the horizontal and vertical axis, aiming to sketch the outline of pavilion.Part 2,Separately discussion:including five chapters—platform, timber structure, dougong, joinery work and tile roof, aiming to improve the structural details of pavilion.Part 3,Preliminary application:restore two pavilions in Chinese paintings in Sung and Jin Dynasties, aiming to test the reliability and credibility of the results.Main results are summarized at the end of the dissertation, including 15 standards and 4 flexible techniques. The former is a common design rule applicable to the general situation, and the latter is a flexible design rule summarized by opera stage in Shanxi. It can supplement the research of the history of classical garden architecture, and also be regarded as part of the research of Yingzao Fashi.
