Workspace management is of great importance to guarantee a safe and smooth construction process. With the rapid development of Building Information Modelling(BIM),especially 4D-BIM,many researchers and practitioners model and allocate workspaces as special BIM elements so the clashes among them,if any,can be detected by the BIM software automatically. However, for some workspaces whose locations are changeable,it is difficult to model them directly. In this paper, such workspaces are called non-modelized workspaces(NWs).Apparently, the collisions in NWs cannot be detected directly by BIM software due to the difficulties of their modeling. To address that limitation, this paper establishes a model for NW analysis consisting of 2 basic modules: the NW clash analysis process module and NW clash analysis method module. In the first module, the 3 main processes, namely NW definition,NW clash analysis, and NW congestion resolution, are introduced;in the second module, the necessary methodologies are prepared for each process aforementioned.During the NW definition process, the NWs are categorized into 2 types: static NWs and dynamic NWs.In order to describe them in a parametric manner, their modeling parameters are also proposed. In addition, considering that the NWs only existed in a certain spatial and temporal context determined by the 3D-BIM model and WBS tasks, the defining and modeling requirements for the WBS tasks and 3D-BIM models are also discussed.During the NW congestion analysis process, based on a snapshot of the 4D-BIM(work frame)where the NW is activated, this research proposed a cell-based strategy that can discretize the NWs into a collection of modelized workspaces for there allocation.A cell-based approach for testing the availability and accessibility of NWs is also proposed to generate the outcomes for workspace congestion resolution.During the NW congestion resolution process, according to the outputs of the NW congestion test, the 2-step principles of the resolution of each kind of congestions are proposed: first, the detected classes need to be verified to ensure they really exist;second, some measures including modifying design plan, modifying construction sequence, adding construction facilities and changing transport plans are taken to resolve the real NW congestions. In addition,a tool prototype is developed based on Autodesk Revit. Its classes,as well as the user interfaces, are introduced in detail. The development of the tool verifies the applicability of the proposed methodologies aforementioned.Furthermore,a validation test is conducted to validate the proposed methodologies as well as to test the tools. The result of this research bridges the gaps between NWs and existing 4D-BIM-Based technologies and is of instructive and innovative significance to the collision analysis of NWs and related software development.
