With the rising of the new round of global technological and industrial revolution today, technological innovation has attracted more attention from countries around the world than ever.In response, these countries have actively implemented series of policies to strength the technological innovation as the core of the development strategy, attempting to be the first mover and leader in the technology areas such as new material, new energy, information technology and bio-technology in the future. In order to catch up with the pace of the technology development, seize the new opportunity brought by the new technology, and derive advantages in the fierce market competition, the firms are required to rapidly grasp the development trend of the technology, precisely identify the technology innovation opportunity, accurately evaluate and predict the prospect of commercialization of the technology, and make the most appropriate strategic decision for their technology development.Consequently, how to grasp new opportunities of technology innovation in the strategic emerging industry has become an important question for both firms and researchers.Resolving this question is also of great importance for formulating technology development strategy,as well as enhancing innovation capability and core competitiveness. In this study,we take “firms technology innovation” as the research target,“fuel cell vehicle firms” as the research object, scientific and technological text as the data source.By applying text mining, network analysis, bibliometric and patentometrics analysis in the study of technology opportunity analysis,we proposes a systematic research paradigm to discover technology opportunity for fuel cell vehicle firms. The main clue of this paradigm contains “theoretical framework and fundamental method”,“core technology development direction identification”,“technology innovation program identification”,“technology commercialization opportunity analysis”.The innovative works in this study are as follows:(1)This study proposes a method paradigm to identify the research direction of core technology for fuel cell vehicle firms. This model creatively introduces the Latent Dirichlet Distribution in the framework of core technology identification, and natural language processing is applied to extract feature words in the texts and identify the core technology composition of the target firm. Then, this study analyzes the technology development level,as well as evaluates the development potential and development priority in each core technology area for the target firm,by which the most appropriate technology development direction for the target firm is identified based on its own technology portfolio. At last,by using the outlier detection method, this study identifies the innovative patents in each core technology area and predicts the potential technology type which may lead the future technology development for the target firm. The empirical study takes General Motors Company as the example, analyzes its core technology portfolio, evaluates its core technology development trend, and identifies its core technology development direction which may improve its technology innovation efficiency.(2)This study constructs a method paradigm to identify the technological innovation program for the fuel cell firms. From the perspective of network analysis, this study defines technology innovation activities using the modified co-occurrence network for feature words, and proposes the concept of network structural chain, which describes the technology innovation program as the prediction of the future variation and correlation of the technology network chain. Then,by identifying the state of patent development in the current technology innovation programs and introducing the feature of article and patent data as well as expert opinions, this study constructs a technology evaluation index system. At last, the study applies regression analysis to complete the evaluation and prediction of innovation program. The empirical study uses hydrogen storage technology as an example, identifies the technology innovation program in the current technology area and recommends the technology innovation opportunities for the firms in different development stages in the future.(3)This study constructs a paradigm to analyze the commercialization opportunity for fuel cell vehicle firms. In the knowledge-oriented global market, the successful commercialization of technology innovation is the key for the survival and development of the firm. This study emphasizes the discovering of commercialization opportunity of technologies for the firms and uses “hydrogen storage technology” as the example in the empirical study. This study proposes a three-tier research paradigm.Firstly,it applies collaborative filtering mechanism to obtain the technology development strategies of the competing opponents in the market.According to the key information of these opponent firms, this study identifies the candidate technology areas which have the market potential and are suitable for the target firm to step into.Secondly,by using the mapping chart which correlates the technologies and commercial areas, this study identifies the specific commercial areas the competition opponent has engaged in,and explores the commercial area which is the most appropriate for the target firm to enter according to its actual demand.Thirdly, based on the indexes which involve the increasing pattern of patents and the trend of multi-area commercialization, this study evaluates the future value of the target business area and recommends the specific commercialization opportunities which have the best development potential.
