As China steps up its international cultural exchanges with the outside world, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),a precious cultural heritage of China,is drawing attention of an increasing number of readers from other countries.Deep rooted in and nurtured by traditional Chinese culture,TCM boasts both unique Chinese cultural features and great application values.Translation,in its traditional sense,is a kind of cross-culture communication,so traditional Chinese medical culture's overseas publicity cannot stand aloof from translation activities. From the perspectives of information transmission and communication, signals(or messages)in transmission will be disturbed by some external factors. In order to achieve high efficiency in transmission, some measures should be taken to smooth away those disturbances,i.e.“noise reducing”,or“denoising”.With“noise reducing”as the research perspective, and with Wilbur Schramm's“field of experience”viewpoint and Hans-Georg Gadamer's“fusion of horizons”theory as the starting point, this dissertation aims to focus on the ways of enhancing the texts'readability and removing or minimizing misunderstandings thus incurring. For a comprehensive and systematic analysis and comparison, this dissertation chooses 9 English versions of Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen(Basic Questions of the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine)(?????·???)as its research objects and take into consideration their writing backgrounds, target readers, translating styles and strategies in order to achieve effectiveness of this research. In the text analysis and comparison, important properties of TCM translation such as intercultural communication, subject specialty and accuracy are given special attention to provide references for future translation activities in this field. In its tentative innovation, this dissertation has made two breakthroughs in traditional Chinese medical culture's translation. To begin with,it changes the onesided study on translation either microscopically or macroscopically, and tries to figure out in a comprehensive way the impediments existing in the translation.Secondly,by introducing the concepts of “field of experience” and “fusion of horizons”,the author aims to get relevant studies free from the more common dualist approach in using domestication and foreignization in translation, and make translation practices more flexible and reader-oriented.In the background of “Chinese culture going global” strategy, conducting studies on how to make our translations more “friendly” and readily acceptable to the foreign readers has become an imperative task for scholars and translators alike in a bid to spark inspirations for further study in this field.
