The Chinese popular literature research is a vital component in Japanese sinology,which has a long history of characteristic and traditional research.As an essential part of the Han literature,the Chinese popular literature set off a boom in Edo Era of Japan.It not only became a teaching material for Japanese to learn Chinese,but also had a huge impact on the Edo literature,and laid a solid foundation of readers in Japan.With the continuous introduction of western literature since modern times,Japan gradually formed a modern academic system.The subject of Chinese popular literature in modern academic significance was established earlier in Japan than China,causing the Chinese popular literature research to usher unprecedented changes.Retracing the history of researching Chinese literature in Japan,especially Chinese popular literature,the contribution of Waseda University should not be ignored.In the charge of Tsubouchi Shoyo,the predecessor of Waseda University Tokyo Special School firstly established a literature department which is characterized by Chinese popular literature.And the courses related were firstly opened by lecturer Mori Kainan.Mori Kainan's opening Chinese popular literature courses in Tokyo Special School is undoubtedly profound.The influence of its significance in the history of Chinese popular literature needs to be given objective and fair evaluation.Just for Waseda University,the tradition pioneered by Mori Kainan has been preserved and carried forward.After Waseda University,Tokyo University and Kyoto University opened courses on Chinese popular literature in succession and set up Chinese popular literature discipline system,and thus became two main bases in the study of Chinese popular literature in modern Japan.Because the two universities had their own mentoring relationships in researching Chinese popular literature,they formed respective genres with their own features.In this paper,the third and the fourth chapters will macroscopically show the overall condition of the two schools mainly through their academic origins,mentoring relationships and academic competitions,etc.And especially made a detailed discussion on the research of Chinese popular literature by some great masters like Kano Naoki,Shionoya On,Koda Rohan,Suzuki Torao,Aoki Masaru,etc.Besides the above three famous universities,there are still some research bases on Chinese popular literature with the center of famous universities in modern Japan.Along with Japan's outward expansion,two imperial universities were established in East Asia colony:Keijo Imperial University and Taihoku Imperial University.Keijo Imperial University,which was in the charge of Kojima kenkichiro,Karashima Takeshi and Taihoku Imperial University,which was in the charge of Kubo Tenzui,Kanda Kiichiro,Harada Suekiyo,etc.both carried out researches on Chinese popular literature respectively.In addition,there were a lot of private universities carried out the researches too.The representatives among them are Takushoku University(represented by Miyahara minpei)and Keio University(represented by Okuno Shintaro).In modern academic transformation period,there are many problems in the research of Chinese popular literature in Japan.These problems cannot resolved by a particular scholar in a paper or a book.And the research result carried out by many scholars during decades became a hot issue in the Chinese literature research in modern Japan,just like drama,novel,rap and other literature forms which have such issues as well.Chapter sixth will selects parts from Nanxi,Water Margin and Dunhuang literature to discuss several hot topics in the research history.The Chinese popular literature research in modern Japan is not only an important part of Japanese sinology,but also is an important part of international academic.So Japan's Chinese literature research is not an isolated phenomenon,its development has always been associated with the international academic.Chapter seventh will try to outline the academic contact and interaction among western countries,Japan and China as well as the three East Asian countries(China,Japan and Korea)through typical cases such as the communication between Shionoya On and European sinologists,the relationship between Guowei Wang's research on Chinese popular literature and Japanese academia,as well as the three modern East Asian countries researching on Dream of Red Mansions.
