As an outstanding art historian,Erwin Panofsky has inherited the traditional German scholarship and has also been trained in the modern Kunstwissenschaft. He represents those who have taken the art history in German speaking countries to the Anglo-American world. The themes he has explored concern nearly every aspect in the field of art history, and his iconology study has exerted a great impact not only on art historians but also the scholars of other disciplines. My thesis aims to reveal how Panofsky shaped his thought in the historical context. It is my intention to reconstruct and portray Panofsky's intellectual milieu which includes educational institution, his researching environment, career situation and his connection with other scholars who had influenced him deeply. Many of his early German writings have played significant roles in the formation of his thought, but on account of the difficulties in translation they were deliberatly ignored or avoided. So with analyzing these texts and other practical studies I plan to trace his intellectual formation.
