Feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas in this thesis refers to the literary works written by women writers in cities of North China and East China, mainly in Beijing,Shanghai and Nanjing from 1937 to 1945.The feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas, represented by Mei Niang(originally named Sun Jiarui),Zhang Ailing and Su Qing, was regarded as “the Third Peak of Feminine Literature in Modern Chinese Literature” by predecessor critics.Since the 1980 s,there has been numerous studies on specific writers and their works in literary journals, while few studies have focused on the macro literary characteristics as a whole in the occupied areas. From the aspect of feminine literature research, the effects of special political and social background upon the writing were barely involved, while in the study of literature in the Japan's occupied areas, few people have placed these women writers' works in the context of modern Chinese feminine literature in their studies.Based on the existent research findings, this thesis, treating feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas as a whole, conducts a typological study on the narrative characteristics of their works.Due to the intertwining of “feminine literature” and“literature in the Japan's occupied areas”,it focuses on the special features in narrative theme and style. With “war” as the background and “city” the specific setting, this paper reveals the physical and mental dilemma encountered by women writers in the Japan's occupied areas, indicating that literature functioned as a tool of logging,a way of making a living, and spiritual sustenance. In this thesis, feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas has not only been placed in its special political and cultural background, but also in the internal rationale of the development of modern Chinese feminine literature,so as to observe the formation of overall style and characteristics of feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas. The main body of this thesis consists of four parts. The first two parts focuses on research from the external factors, exploring the effects of two major external factors,“war” and “city”,upon women writers' narrative characteristics, while the second part emphasizes the internal factors, elaborating the inherent logic of feminine literature from the perspective of gender relations narrative and body narrative and revealing the germination and awakening of female consciousness. The first chapter discusses how the was shaped the feminine literature in the Japan's occupied areas, analyzing specific features and causes of two themes in the narrative of women writers,“fear” and “displacement”.In the second chapter, the author emphasizes the close relationship between city and feminine literature in theJapan's occupied areas, analyzing the coexistence of “flourishing” and “loneliness”images in the urban narrative,as well as the artistic characteristics and strategies of feminine urban narrative in the Japan's occupied areas. The third chapter, starting with gender relations, investigates the strategies of narrating heterosexual relationship and relationship between women, with a highlight of women writers' cognition and reflection on their own situations. The fourth chapter inquires into the technique and cause of body narration in the feminine literature of the Japan's occupied areas, regarding it as an significant phenomenon in the development of feminine literature. In the conclusion part, the author summarizes and evaluates the general characteristics of feminine literature narrative in the Japan's occupied areas and reviews its significance in the literary history.
