Fu Guo Ce was published in 1880 by Wang Fengzao and his teacher W.Martin at The Peking Tungwen College, and it is the first Chinese translation of western political economy. The current research on the translation, without any touch upon the translated text, narrowly centers upon its values in history of economic thought and translation history, and there are disagreements in translation mode, patronage and translation effects. This research, therefore,is of great value. This dissertation approaches the translated version from the perspective of socio-translation studies with the help of parallel textual corpora, documents analysis,Chinese articoloty, textual linguistics, and theories of translation strategy and norms to answer the four questions concerning the features of its translation field, the features of its textual form and economics content, its translation strategies and their underlying reasons. The study shows that in the translation field of Fu Guo Ce,patronage is officially, institutionally and individually complex;the initiator works as a strategy-maker and co-translator at once;26 chapters(out of 42 chapters)are kept in translation, and a lot of the macro-economic thoughts are deleted, while the micro-economic ones are mostly translated;the main translation strategies include adaptation to Confucianism;analogical interpretation;category-linking;thick translation;juxtaposition of different fonts, elucidation with similar thoughts in target culture and changing examples, with clarity and expressiveness as its ultimate strategical purpose;underlying these strategies are the normative factors which, though contradictory to each other, mainly include pragmatism, patrons' intentions, proposed readership, norms in articology, and professional norms with interference and modulation from the co-translators'habitus;the most decisive factor is the co-translators' internalization in their habitus of the Confucianism Supplemented by Western Science initiative in Chinese ethnicity, the then guideline of the Pro-Westernization Group in the late Qing dynasty. In addition, the research also has significant findings concerning economic terms,Re-translation of Fu Guo Ce,readership, beautification of Christianization and colonization.
