Human beings can accurately and quickly report the identity or category of an object in the central visual field. At present, the object recognition research has developed from the bimodal confrontation of the object-centered theory and the viewer-centered theory to the tripartite confrontation of the object-centered theory, the viewer-centered theory and the intergrated representation. The object-centered theory emphasizes shape processing, the viewer-centered theory emphasizes view processing, and the intergrated representation theory thinks that both are important. What is the relationship between shape processing and view processing?Up to now, there is no consistent experimental evidence.Current studies have shown that, perhaps moderated by visual experience and task goals, shape processing and view processing can form different relationship.Recently,Buetti et al.(2016)has proposed a visual processing dual model to explain the mechanism of intergrated representation at different stages, which proves that the relationship between shape characteristics and view characteristics is also related to the representation stage.Previous behavior experiments indirectly speculate on the relationship, while the direct study trace the different information at different stages is relatively rare. The current study is based on the intergrated representation, manipulate the stimulus material itself, and we use behavioral experiments and recording eyemovement patterns to test the relationship of shape processing and view processing in different stage,as well as how the visual experience and task are moderated. We contains ten experiments for three studies.Study 1 was focusing on whether or not shape processing and view processing could form partial dissociation and partial intergration in 3D novel objects.Experiment 1 found that the surface material was also processed automatically, which was partially dissociated at the basic-level,and partly intergrated at the sample-level.Under the premise of ensuring the shape information unchanged, experiment 2 showed that the mirror image information and shape information appeared intergrated representation at the basic-level.In experiment 3,the complexity of shape information was increased and six views were rotated. The results showed that the view processing were preferentially, shape processing and view processing was also appeared intergrated representation.Basing on experiment 3,experiment 4 did not change shape information, changed the view information as shadow information, the result showed that the internal shadow information was also preferentially processed, and there was intergrated representation.Study 2 was interested in whether the intergrated representation of shape processing and view processing was existed in 3D commom objects, and what the similarities and differences in two kinds of objects representation which is with or without visual experience.Experiment 5 found that the intergrated representation of shape information and surface material information appeared both at the basic-level and the sample-level.In experiment 6,it is found that the mirror image processing and the shape processing were intergrated representation both on two levels.Experiment 7 showed that the intergrated representation of shape processing and view processing only appeared in the direct task.Likewise, experiment 8 found that shadow information and shape information was only represented intergrated in the direct task.Futhermore, comparing the two experiments,it was found that visual experience played a moderating role in the relationship between shape processing and view processing.Basing on the two behavioral experiments, study 3 used eye movement technique to directly track the temporal characteristics. This study investigated how shape processing and view processing interacted with each other under different time windows,as well as the role of visual experience and task objectives.Experiment 9 found that the mirror images processing appeared early in the visual representation, and the shape processing took place in the whole process.Similarly, experiment 10 found that shadow information processing mainly appeared in the early stage and the shape processing occurred in the whole process.Equally importantly, the two experiments showed that the eye movement patterns could reflect people's cognitive speed and the order of information, and also reflect the representation of the detail features. The cognitive speed of local shape representation and whole view representation was intergrated representation in the early stage, and who with visual experience can represent shape information quickly.Only when the shape information was insufficient, the view information would be represented.According to the studies above,we make conclusions as follows:the relationship between shape processing and view processing is partially dissociated and partly intergrated, and 3D object vision recognition is a multi-information hierarchical intergrated representation.(1)Shape processing and view processing could form dissociated representation both in 3D novel objects and 3D common objects.(2)When the shape information was insufficient or lack of visual experience, people will combined the information of surface material, angle, mirror image, shadow and other views to represent the object. The intergrated representation of the shape processing and view processing is characterized by a hierarchical intergrated process. They were not simply "all" or "no" representations.(3)The characteristics of hierarchical intergrated representation of shape processing and view processing can not be explained by either the object-centered theory or the viewer-centered theory, but rather reflect the idear of the integrated representation. Therefore, based on the visual processing dual model of Buetti et al.(2016),we constructed a dual representation and three stages model to explain the psychological mechanism of 3D object visual representation."Dual representation" refers to two different ways of representation. It includes automatic, fast, unconscious, holistic representation and nonautomatic, slow, conscious, analytic representation."Three stages" are divided on the dimension of time processing.3D object recognition will go through three stages:rough view processin, rough shape processing, and precise detail processing. The whole representation process of object recognition was moderated by visual experience and task goal.Compared with the previous models, this model focuses on describing the intergrated representation and dynamic real-time representation, which not only alleviates the controversy among the previous theoretical models. It also promotes the understanding of the intergrated representation of different information in object recognition, but its applicability needs to be further studied.
