A Study Of Chen Hongshou's Life

Chen Hongshou is a well-known figure painter in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.For the painting giant,the related discussion and research have been going on for nearly four hundred years.The discussion of his life,poems and his calligraphy and painting has formed the three research areas of the research on Chen Hongshou.Among them,the examination of his life can be regarded as the basis of the discussion and the basis of further explanation.However,there are still a lot of problems in the study of Chen Hongshou's life,and we should pay attention to two points.At first,the Chronicle of Chen Hongshou 's life,which was written sixty years ago,is still widely used by current academic research.However,it actually needs to be further amended,improved and updated.Moreover,the analysis of Chen Hongshou's life was often confined to Chen Hongshou's own experience or one-sided description of the previous literature,and failed to carry out more in-depth and specific interpretation by combining his experience with his social network.In order to solve these problems,the author has carefully studied the composition of Chen Hongshou and his relatives and friends,analyzed his social relations and life experience,and tried to make a more accurate and thorough study of Chen Hongshou's life.The paper was divided into four chapters.In the first chapter,we have combed academic history of the research on Chen Hongshou.Compared to the general introduction of research literature,the author would like to further present different cultural and historical trends about the Chen Hongshou study in four hundred years.On this basis,we established the research issues and methods,to make this paper rooted in academic traditions and inspirational to the direction and method of future research.Therefore,the contents of the other three chapters consciously explored the problems existing in the present study.On the one hand,we would provide more comprehensive and accurate information about Chen Hongshou's life and poetic creation through the correction for the Chen Hongshou's chronology.On the other hand,we would explore the path and method for the deeper research on Chen Hongshou's life through examining Chen Hongshou's father-in-law and studying the travel of Chen Hongshou.In the second chapter,we examined Chen Hongshou's father-in-law.In view of the historical literature about Chen Hongshou father-in-law differences,through the poems in the Zhuluoshan Collection of Chen Yuchao,Chen Hongshou's father,and in the Cha'an Poems of Lai Sixing,Chen Hongshou's father-in-law,this paper firstly reasoned and restored the whole process of Chen Hongshou's marriage,and clarified a long misunderstanding of Chen Hongshou 's father-in_law and Chen Hongshou's painting enlightenment.In addition,by Chen Hongshou's marriage changes,we explored the fall of Chen Hongshou's family and his identity in ten years.Thus,this paper not only can improve the lack of Chen Hongshou's early life research,also explore family factors in Chen Hongshou's personality.In the third chapter,we studied the travel of Chen Hongshou.The author took Chen Hongshou's experience of going to Beijing as the research focus.Through the systematic review and the detailed examination of the poems in the Baoluntang Collection(Kangxi Edition),this paper re-examined and analyzed the problems such as the number of times of Chen Hongshou's going to Beijing,the time of the round trip,the creation of poetry,and the activities in the capital,which were inadequate in previous studies.Because of these two travels,one occurred in the Tianqi period,related Chen Hongshou's early life;the other one occurred at the end of Chongzhen period,related Chen Hongshou's later life,so through them,we could analyze Chen Hongshou's choice of livelihood and career when he was facing family decline in his prime age.In the fourth chapter,we corrected the Chen Hongshou's chronology.Through the study of the Baoluntang Collection(Kangxi Edition)and other more literature,this paper supplemented and fixed the Chronicle of Chen Hongshou's life written by Huang Yongquan.Compared with the Chronicle of Chen Hongshou's life which took the poems with clear date of creation in the Baoluntang Collection(Guangxu Edition),this paper had made two advancements.At first,the Baoluntang Collection(Kangxi Edition)and other more historical literature is included in the research field of view in this paper.Moreover,the in-depth analysis on a large number of poems without clear creation time in the Baoluntang Collection(Kangxi Edition)would greatly enriched the study of Chen Hongshou's life,which should have important academic value to Chen Hongshou's life or poetry research.
