“Royal Female in Qing Dynasty” refers in particular to royal female living in Qing royal court,including empresses,concubines,empress dowagers and princesses of each dynasty.Qing royal female portraits were works focusing on Qing royal female images.This paper made a systematic analysis on the existing royal female portraits in Qing dynasty and the related document.From the perspective of female study,portraits were classified into five categories according to the historical significance and the role female royalties in Qing dynasty play.They are portraits of women in court dress and bust,portraits of women dressed like farmers and sericulture farmers,portraits of women dressed like civil service and educator,portraits of women in military uniforms and portraits of female dictator.First of all,this paper unveiled the creation motivation,creation time and the later painting problems of royal women in court dress,and studied he relationship between the function,purpose,value,significance and system of the bust.Second,under the background of a society where emperors attached great importance to agriculture,the method of portraiture and sociology was used for the comprehensive analysis on the quality of “playing alone”and “jointly play” of imperial female in the portraits themed farming and sericulture farming,namely,how to use imperial portraits of female alone or together with the emperor to achieve political education.Third,relations between imperial female portraits and the four ideals of Confucianism “Xiu,Qi,Zhi,Ping”(self cultivation,family harmony,country management and world peace)were studied.Forth,the relations between female military uniform and the state policy of “ securing the country with military forces” of Qing dynasty were studied,and the important role of imperial female in the Qing dynasty they played in pre-military activities were discussed.Finally,key studies of the formation of the Empress Dowager Cixi's image of “Uncrowned Queen” and “Savior” were studied which revealed her complex attitude toward her self-portraits as the dominant initiator of western portraits.With results of innovative research stated above,in-depth studies were conducted todemonstrate the political system and considerations hidden in the theme of the paintings,political education,literary and martial arts,the reception and spreading of artistic styles.This paper revealed that portraits of the imperial female in Qing dynasty accounts for half of the paintings of Qing dynasty in total,meaning that female portraits were equal to emperor portraits in number.It not only reflected the political importance and historical status of imperial female in Qing dynasty,but also manifested their artistic value in the history of Chinese art,history of women's painting,history of the characters and history of Sino-western artistic exchange.
