This paper tries to discuss and explain the development and influence of Catholic painting in China. The development of Catholic art in China has gone through three stages.First, the missionaries represented by matteo ricci in the late Ming dynasty tried their best to publicize the Christian faith to the literati class, but they did not achieve good results in the field of painting.Although in his own account, ricci claimed that his mission had made a significant impact in China,it was actually a strategy to gain the support of the holy see.At this time,China was not highly enthusiastic about the images brought by western missionaries, but scholars in the late Ming dynasty had noticed the "real" characteristics of western images. In Chinese folk, many engravings produced by western jesuits are also for missionary service, and they borrow the traditional Chinese woodblock engravings.Engraving also generally comes from China. When the engraving with traditional technology is used to represent some works with three-dimensional effect of jesuits, due to the imperfection of technology, some works integrating Chinese and western styles are produced. We don't think this is a conscious creation, but an image system integrating Chinese and western styles is produced. The second stage is the eclectic approach represented by lang, whose influence is still limited to the neiting, although the painting appearance is still in the stage of harmonizing Chinese and western techniques and styles. The third stage is the period of tushanwan and furen university in Peiping. The localization trend of Catholic painting initiated in this period, which is based on Chinese painting while integrating western painting style, creates Catholic art in line withChinese believers' belief to a certain extent.Tushanwan in Shanghai is based on western painting in terms of its education and painting style. The teachers and students of furen university in Peiping, who were active in the 20 th century, were mostly traditional Chinese painters.Although some characteristics of western paintings were integrated into their works, they were still generally expressed with the brush and ink or composition of Chinese paintings. However,in terms of themes, they mainly expressed doctrines and created a unique Catholic art.Since the late Ming dynasty to the period of the republic of China,is in an important period, introduces the Catholic art development important period in China,in terms of painting, which appeared a number of different development direction, although most failed to in-depth development bottom go to,but the process is on the development of Catholic art localization for us a lot of good thinking.
