Huangren,,a character with distinct personality, fantastic ideas and outstanding achievements in the history of modern literature, was born in 1866,died in 1913.Amidst the winds of changes,Huangren's thoughts experiences tremendous change, due to the inter-influence from Chinese traditional culture,Wu's regional culture and those of the Westerns'.He intended to pursue a political career, and instead of that,he went into a revolutionary man of letters. However, with expectations and personal ideals crushed down,Huangren was caught up in maniac, and finally died.Huangren is an important writer, scholar, social activist and educator in modern times.Huang's multi-identity enables him to succeed much in the field of literary creation, literary theory, translation of foreign novels, and establishing press and papers.Apart from these,Huangren also achieved from educational reform and democratic revolution. However, compared with Liang Qichao,Wu Mei,Wang Guowei and other contemporaries,Huangren did not get the corresponding status, and their value in the history of literature also needs to be more in-depth excavation. This dissertation attempts to draw a comprehensive analysis of Huangren, and make a reasonable evaluation, based on the cultural background, complicated experiences, and his ideal changes. The dissertation divides into six chapters. The first three chapters mainly study the literary history, literary theory and literary creation of the Huang Ren in the context of modern literary transformation, which is the key part of the paper. The transitional characteristics of the Huang people's times are clearly reflected in their literary theory and creation. The first chapter explores the relationship between Huang Ren's History of Chinese Literature and the rise of modern new literary history, traces back to the origin of "Chinese Literature History",compares " Litterateur Biography ","Treatise on Literature","Bibliographic Summary" in Chinese academic tradition with "Literature History" in modern academic system, and analyzes their fundamental differences. The development of "Chinese Literature History" in the West and Japan, and the reasons for the emergence of "Chinese Literature History" in Chinese writings.By comparing Dou,Lin and Huang's three earliest works of literary history, this paper analyzes the originality and influence of Huang's literary history, and does not avoid its limitations as a preliminary literary history. The second chapter focuses on discussing therelationship between the new changes of modern literary criticism and Huang's literary theory, combing the evolution track of ancient and modern literary theory criticism, and then probing into the inheritance and innovation of Huang's novel theory, drama theory, poetry theory and CI theory to classical literary theory, and the limitations existing in the conflict between new and old ideas. The third chapter focuses on the literary creation practice of Huang people, interprets Huang people's poems and ci-poems from the aspects of subject matter, theme and artistic characteristics, analyzes the new and old characteristics embodied in them, and finally discusses the achievements and shortage of Huang people's literary creation,as well as the lagging behind compared with literary theory. The latter three chapters mainly focus on Huang Ren's literary activities, such as education, publishing, and associations, and discuss the relationship between the Huang people and the development of modern liberal arts education, literary publishing and literary associations, which embodies the rigorous and open academic atmosphere, ardent pursuit of democracy and freedom of Huang Ren.The fourth chapter combs the activities of Huang Ren's study and education, especially highlights tis contribution to Chinese liberal education.During the thirteen years in Dongwu University,Huang made great contributions in the field of ideological enlightenment, liberal arts and intellectuals' cultivation, through teaching, compiling teaching materials, and hosting university papers. The fifth chapter analyzes the role and function Huangren has played in transformation of modern publication.Especially his relationship with the Lin society and the Rotary Club of Sinology. From his various activities,it can be drawn that Huang ren attempts to preserve the quintessence of Chinese culture on the one hand, and on the other,to introduce the western knowledge to lay a serious criticism on the feudalism, and propagate the western democracy, which pushed forward the transformation of traditional publication to the modern one.Last chapter's focus is on Huangren's relation with the transformation of Chinese modern social groups.Social activities hold a major part in Huang's cultural activities. This chapter will examine Huang's activities thoroughly.Huang's biggest contribution lies in the transformation of modern social groups, the clash between the old and new cultures, and his political ideas in the anti-feudalism and anti-imperialism.These activities not only pushed forward the development of democratic revolution and the revolutionary literature, but also pictured how those intellectuals fought with their pens in the revolution. In short,Huang Ren's life, after half a century of vicissitudes of life, witnessedthe great changes of the times,is a "promoter" and "witness" of the transformation of modern Chinese literature. His literary thought, creation and activities all reflect the contradiction and fusion between the old and new cultures and the transition from traditional literature to modern literature. On his body, there was not only the traditional literati's enthusiasm for serving the world, the sense of grieving the world at that time, the persistence of the traditional culture, the conservatism and limitation of the times, but also the lofty ideals of the new intellectuals in modern times, the innovative spirit of criticizing the feudal autocratic culture, and the ardent pursuit of democracy and freedom.Seeking harmony and innovating spirit based on comparison between China and the West.He inherited the tradition of Chinese classical literature and the legacy of Li Bai,Li He,Wang Zhongqu and Gong Dingan.Drawing lessons from advanced foreign cultures and ideas,he had many independent views and innovations, which exerted a profound influence on later scholars such as Wu Mei,Wang Qian,Chen Naiqian and Chen Dabei. In the transformation process of Chinese literature from classical to modern,Huang Ren can not be ignored. It needs to be placed in the context of the transformation of modern Chinese literature,to do a more comprehensive and objective study, and to analyze his typical significance.
