Literary Position was one of the longest, most popular and far-reaching national literary journals during Anti-Japanese War. It began its first issue on April 16th, 1938 in Guangzhou and ended six years later. That is to say, the journal covered almost the whole period of the war. It not only actively participated in various debates among literary forums in wartime, but also guided the development of the wartime literature. Therefore, the journal played an important role in the field of the wartime literature. Through the study of Literary Position, this thesis systematically analyzes the changes of the journal in three times of movements from Guangzhou and Hongkong to Shanghai to Chongqing and reproduces the literary development during the war, which helps understand the development of wartime literature. The thesis consists of four parts. The first part makes a detailed introduction to the characteristics of Literary Position. It puts the changes of the journal in three times of movements from Guangzhou and Hongkong to"Isolated Island"of Shanghai to Chongqing, the temporary capital city of China, in the background of Anti-Japanese War, and respectively introduces the outstanding editors, the editorial orientation of realism and the rich and colorful columns of the journal. In other words, this part draws the outline for Literary Position. The second part studies the literary theories and works in Literary Position of Guangzhou and Hongkong and analyzes its guiding role in the development of wartime literature during the forepart of Anti-Japanese War. In details, it first lays most importance to the study of the debates of the journal on"exposure and irony"and on the popularity of literature. Then, it explores the literature works of the journal which satirized the evil with various themes and types of literature. Finally, it analyzes the effect of the journal in Guangzhou and Hongkong on speeding up the development of literature during the forepart of the war.The third part discusses the literary trends of Literary Position in"Isolated Island" of Shanghai. It explores the development of popular novels and the literary debates under the influence of"national form". It continues with the study of reportages about the war published in the journal which was located in an"isolated island"as the place literally means. Furthermore, it studies Lu Xun-ism influenced by the movement of commemorating Lu Xun in Shanghai. The fourth part probes into the stylistic changes of literary works after Literary Position was moved to Chongqing. It first analyzes the transformation of the novels in the aspect of narration during the latter period of Anti-Japanese War, that is, the short stories satirizing the evil was transferred to the epics about the real life. Then, it studies the expansion of the themes in poetry under the influence of the diversity of literature during this period. Finally, it reviews the translations of masterpieces published in the journal during this period and analyzes the influence of Soviet literature on the development of Chinese wartime literature.Through a systematic study of Literary Position, the thesis provides a new perspective for further studying the development of literature during Anti-Japanese War as well as helps understand the process and trends of literature of this period.
