This thesis focuses on international communication of Chinese documentary.As a spread power beyond the border,the ability of international communication concerns national interest.The building goals of international communication ability are agenda-setting and framework construction.The process and elements of international communication are both affected by government agencies and culture,we know that media is the most important factor of international communication ability,so the mainstream media is the most important way to improve international communication ability of a country.The assessment of a media's international communication ability includes contents,communication,management and manufacture ability etc.Upon all these factors,contents is the main factor,unique contents is the core element to create the communication power.As an important media of international communication,documentary plays an important role in recording the history of China,shaping the national image and spreading Chinese culture values.The current era is characterized by politics and media cooperation to set the global agenda.How to make the documentary spread effectively in the world has become an important topic about "cultural stepping-out" and "improving soft power" in the new period.The paper aims at analyzing and discussing the international communication of Chinese documentary.First of all,this paper takes a review of historical international communication of Chinese documentary.In the early stage of our country,the concept of documentary was influenced by the Soviet model,Chinese documentary spread overseas through the mainstream channels carryed with obvious mark of external publicity.Although the communicating effect was not very satisfactory,it cannot be denied that the “stepping-out" of Chinese documentary is benefited by the planned economy system,the policy of international exchange and cooperation provided support on shooting technique and acting on international convention.With the film concept transformation and industrialization of media reform,Chinese documentary has quickly become the cultural product,which traded in TV activities.In the meantime,it interacts with overseas market for multi-level exchanges.In the paper,the Chinese documentary export sales data in China international television corporation for last two decades was analyzed.Moreover,it researches the data of most international sales potential and award winning documentaries which are elected by international jury and buyer from China(Guangzhou)internationsl documentary film festival for last ten years.By analyzing,it is found that the documentaries with traditional Chinese cultural characteristics have been the best selling inrecent years.And Chinese individual's real life under different social and historical environment has become popular perspective of Chinese documentary in the world.Chinese social transformation has undoubtedly become the hot spot for the overseas audience.As a result of international convention,the excessive adaption of Chinese documentary cannot be neglected,in the paper,the documentary named “the Imperial Palace” was taken as an example to discuss the production problem of dual subject.The Cold War mentality covered by textual adaption of cultural discounts deserves vigilance.As a successful example of international communication of Chinese documentary,“ a Bite of China” broke an overseas release record.The documentary“a Bite of China” records the production techniques of Chinese traditional food and the cultural meaning behind that consumption activity.Under the circumstance of Chiese urban and rural relationship caused by migration,it shows the general social landscape of contemporary China using internationally accepted documentary language.The documentary gains great honor,at the same time,the criticism of technical copying and falseness made us to think over the concept of “factual entertainment” from Hollywood.In the background of globalization,it is important to balance the cross-culture communication and the native culture and history.Finally,we realized that the documentaries record ourself and we ourself are going into the world.In the latter part of this paper,the way and strategy to improve the abilty of spreading Chinese documentary are discussed.Under the interaction of external publicity,cultural strategy and industrial policy,Chinese documentary has been exploring in making way, content and mode selection and accumulating much experience.In the low-context and words hegemony as the main feature of international public opinion environment,we need a higher cultural consciousness and more wisdom to properly present Chinese documentary with Chinese characteristics by using internationally accepted documentary language.The documentaries analyzed and discussed in this thesis are limited,it excludes documentary released in cinema and independent documentary can not played on TV.The paper focuses on documentary context which is the determining factor that affects international communication of Chinese documentary.The marketing survey will be the follow-up step.
