As a transportation hub of the Silk Road, the Lop Nur area has an important strategic position and plays an active significance in the cultural pattern of “Han and Tang Prosperous Age” in the history of China. However, the Lop Nur area is located in an arid and semi-arid region of the western part of China where ecological environment is fragile.Historically, the environmental changes in this area have had a tremendous impact on the development of local social civilization. This study will focus on the natural environment of the Lop Nur area from the Han to Tang Dynasty, such as animal and plant communities, natural climate, rivers and lakes system, and the social environment elements such as urban settlements, traffic roads, industrial forms, and oasis social order. The study discusses the environmental evolution of the Lop Nur area in different periods of the Han Dynasty,Wei and Jin Dynasties,Southern and Northern Dynasties,Sui and Tang Dynasties according to the historical time sequence, and re-examines the path and characteristics of the environmental evolution of the Lop Nur area during the Han and Tang Dynasties through the interactive perspective of “ecological environment-social civilization”.The paper incorporates the environmental history into the paradigm of historical geography research in the Lop Nur area, emphasizing the integrity of the interaction between the ecological environment and social civilization, which not only enriches the content of Northwestern history and geography, but also provides a new perspective to research the inland river basin environment evolution which with good academic value and realistic perspective. In addition to the records in the handed down literature on Lop Nur and its related areas, the sources of materials in this study also refer to documents unearthed in Xin Jiang such as ancient letter in Lou-lan and Niya,Sogda letter and other archaeological materials Such as tombs, city sites and other physical information. The research combines qualitative research with quantitative research methods, and comprehensively uses multidisciplinary methods such as historical philology, environmental archaeology, ecology, sociology and cultural anthropology, and usesgeographic information technology such as remote sensing and GIS and uses historical long-term theory, historical social psychology,Zhu Ke zhen's climate change theory and ecological resilience as the theoretical guidance to analyze, summarize and summarize the related literature of Lop Nur area. The study concluded that the environmental evolution of the Lop Nur region is mainly manifested by changes in the landscape content of the Lop Nur River water system, traffic roads, urban settlements and industrial forms. The environmental changes in the Lop Nur area during the Han and Tang Dynasties were characterized by periodic changes. The ups and downs of social civilization and the rise and fall of the ecological environment have a large degree of positive correlation. When the ecological environment in Lop Nur area was destroyed and deteriorated, the local social civilization was in a state of weakness or even abandonment;and once the environment improved, the society began to gradually recover and revive. The natural environment of the Lop Nur area itself has ecological toughness and can resist a certain degree of external disturbance and self-repair.On the whole, the main factor affecting the ecological environment change in Lop Nur during the Han and Tang Dynasties is the change of nature itself, while human activities only have the active influence of promoting or delaying the time and process of ecological restoration.
