American scholar James O’Connor systematically states the importance and significanceof “human being and nature” view in the modern society in his book "Natural Causes–Essays in Ecological Marxism". Facing the global ecological crisis and environmentaldeterioration, there is not only environmental and economic issues, but also the socialissues of Socialism replacing capitalism.As the development of Ecological Marxism, O’Connor transforms the cultural perceptionof human being on the natural angle, reconstructs Historical Materialism from thedialectical unity of nature, culture and society. After inheriting the theoretical results ofMarxism and Western Marxism, James O’Connor combines with modern ecology andsystem theory, demonstrates the inevitability of Ecological Socialism.This thesis synthesizes the home and abroad research of O’Connor, analyzes hisEcological Marxism view, and emphasizes his “human being and nature” view. Thepurpose is to seek the feasible path for the ecological crisis. James O’Connor insists thebasic principle of Marxism, combines with Western Marxism, modern ecology andsystem theory, takes the nature as starting point, takes human being’s society as ultimatepurpose, demonstrates the inevitability of Ecological Socialism from labor and culture.Of course, O’Connor could not get rid of the boundedness of his era and class; he showsthe limitation of following Marxism principle and micawberism of realizing EcologicalSocialism. Even so, O’Connor’s view plays a huge influence on the development ofWestern Marxism, as well as provides a feasible way to the environmental degradationand ecological crisis.James O’Connor’s “human being and nature” view is the starting point of EcologicalMarxism, is also the basement of Ecological Socialism. It provides the guidance andsolution to economic crisis and ecological crisis. His theory has important reference significance and practical value to selecting development mode and constructingharmonious socialism.
