Studies On Yuan T'ung-li(1895-1949)

Yuan T'ung-li,poetic name Shou-ho,with root in An Su country of Zhili Province,was born 1895 in his private home in Nanheng Street in Beijing,and died of illness in 1965 in Washington,D.C.In the year of his birth,the Self-Strengthening Movement that created with �Tongzhi Restoration� had been illusionary in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895.The series of events that profoundly influenced the changes of China's modern history was to come.The Chinese Modern Library Cause �initiated� three years later.He developed his own new knowledge and Old-Learning in this great transformation era,and responded to that era with the development of the librarians hip,and also achieved his pioneering position in the Chinese Modern Library Cause.Before the United States settled in early 1949,he not only led the country's largest nationa l library and brought it to the world,but also deeply participated in the society transform of modern China.In the recent 30 years,the research on Yuan T'ung-li has gradually gained wide concern by the library community.Excelent thematic discussions have emerged in an endless stream and are still be in the ascendant.However,confined to the material and field of vision factor,there is not much discussion in the history filed on Yuan T'ung-li and the transform of modern China.Accordingly,this dissertation,on the based of the research results of the library community,will penetrate into these kinds of questions,emphasizes his unique significance in the modern transition,enrich and deepen the intension and extension of the study on Yuan T'ung-li.The major part of the dissertation includes four chapters except the Preface,Conclusions and the Appendix,Mr.T'ung-li Yuan's Chronicle Preliminary(1895-1965).The four chapters systematically discusses in terms of his family history,educating life,learning and career.Chapter I discusses the family history of Yuan,analyzes the modern significance of the family migration from the countryside to city,and the features of primary education accepted by Yuan T'ung-li,especial on the proportion of modern knowledge and traditional learning.Chapter II discusses his educating life,studies the formation of Yuan Tongli's modern knowledge structure.This chapter not only discusses his background and achievements of Peking University's preparatory studies,but also pays attention to his first library career in Tsinghua College,and analyses the cultivation of new knowledge in modern library science while studying in the United Stated and Europe.In the Tsinghua College section,the characteristics of the development of modern library history are also briefly combed;in the study of the United States and Europe,focuses on his extensive participation in various scholarly organizations under the significance of modern group studies,and researches the cultivation of new knowledge library science centered on modern bibliography.Chapter III of his academic character takes the inquiry and research of the Yongle Dadian as an example,and combines his experience in the Library Association of China and the National Library of Peiping(NLP)to systematically study his 15 research results,and details the modern transformation of cataloguing methods,the changes in the concept of rare books and the transformation of Yongle Dadian from history of lose to history of reading.Chapter IV of his library cause is based on the NLP which condensed his efforts before going abroad.This chapter starts with the purpose of three that he announce to the world how to running the NLP,and discusses one by one his modernization process of leading the NLP to the world,and studies the modern significance of this process.The Appendix,Mr.T'ung-li Yuan's Chronicle Preliminary(1895-1965),is not only a complication of historical materials of his life,but also a useful supplement to the major part of the dissertation,providing a relative ly detailed background for his unique position in society transform of modern China.
