A Study On The History Institute Of National Academy Of Peiping

The History Institute of National Academy of Peiping was a local professional research institution which existenced for 20 years during the period of Republic of China, there were a large number of history talents, including some famous scholars such as Xu Bingchang, Gu Jiegang, Bai Shouyi, Su Bingqi,etc. The institute had carried out many researches and made great achievements. This thesis according to a large number of related datas, attempts to obtain a more comprehensive exposition by searching and analyzing about their academic achievements.The National Academy of Peiping was established in 1929 at the background of a educational and administrative system reform during the period of Republic of China, and the History Seminar was setted up at the same time. In 1935 , in order to promote research carried out smoothly and improve efficiency, there was a institutional reform which the History Seminar was turned into the History Institute. The History Institute was existed 20 years until 1949, there were three periods including before(1929-1937), during(1937-1945) and after (1946-193 9)the Anti-Japanese War. The History Institute continued to grow and develop, established historical journal, carried out many historical and archaeological researches, made an important position in academia.As a local institute, the History Institute followed New History closely and planned research works. It relied on Peiping's history and rich cultural relics, used of field surveys and other new methods, to attempt to codify a new Peiping Chorography. It was innovative and bread through the frame of the old chorography.At the same time, the History Institute concerned about the increasingly serious national crisis extremely, serviced for social and practical by academic research, finished a lot of frontier and social history of historical data and had a wide range of publication. Under the leadership of Gu Jiegang, some experts finished" Shi Ji" which accumulated valuable experiences. Some specialists such as Bai Shouyi passed the rigorous trainings and established the academic status in the future.China started the cause of archaeology in the early 20th century, developed rapid. The History Institute launched a series of archaeological excavation works immediately after setting up the Archaeology Group. Combined with Peking University and Antiquities Custody Commission, they made up of "Yan Xiadu Archaeological Mission" and began to explore the site scientifically; Combined with Shanxi government, they made up of Shanxi Archaeological Council, began to investigate some sites ,such as Fenggao, Daqu, Yong, A Fanggong, Chen Baoci in Shanxi, explored the Dou Jitai tombs of Zhou dynasty and Zhong Shusheng site of Tang dynasty in Xian, all of these had contributed to promote the national culture of the early history and related research about Pre-Qin. The south and north Xiang Tang Temples had an equally important position with Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes, some experts like Xu Bingchang and Gu Jiegang devoted a great deal of effort to investigate, facsimile and research for studying and protecting, there were also a number of publications. These pioneering contributions had laid a solid foundation for the further archaeological excavation after the founding of the PRC. The History Institute setted both the public and personal contribution, excluded all kinds of difficulties in the long-term period of turmoil, persisted in academic research, made remarkable achievements, created a large number of young scholars which full of potential. Their contributions should be remembered with the future generations.
