Since the 20 th century,under the dual effects of frequent domestic political/cultural movements and the introduction of western culture,Chinese painting has undergone great changes in terms of its external form as well as inner emotional spirit,which has been recognized as an event of great academic and theoretical significance.It also becomes a landmark in the history of Chinese art.It was in this context that He Haixia chose the art of painting and fought for the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese painting all his life.From his apprenticeship,he joined social arts groups,honored famous artists as his teachers,laid a solid foundation for traditional painting and devoted himself to the improvements of Chinese painting.After the founding of the People's Republic of China,he moved and took root in Chang'an.Under the guidance of the revolutionary art theory,he explored the new language of painting,and used his pen to depict the new era and new life.He insisted on his artistic ideal,and together with Zhao Wangyun and Shi Lu,he laid a solid foundation for the formation of “Chang'an painting school”,which won the praise of the Chinese art circle at that time.With the end of the “cultural revolution” and the advert of reforming and opening up,he,who was physically and mentally “liberated”,started his self-reforming travel of “what I do makes who I am”.In his later years,He Haixia returned to his hometown,but still committed to artistic innovation.At this time,he reached another height in the pursuit of green landscape painting art,creating an unprecedented pattern and stepping into the environment of artistic life.He Haixia's artistic achievements in landscape painting are characterized by his innovation as well as adherence to tradition.This thesis systematically analyzes the trajectory of his art and the artistic innovation of his landscape painting based on his60 years of artistic study,practice,innovation,reform and transformation,as well as the huge influence from thought to art brought to him by the changes of times and society.When we explore He Haixia's landscape painting,we also start a journey of the development history of Chinese landscape painting reform in the 20 th century.From this experience,we understand the feelings of the older generation of artists,their responsibility for the national culture and the promotion of the spirit of the Times.
