Codified acting patterns,as important means of achieving acting skills,is widely used in actor training and performing of the traditional performing arts such as Chinese opera and Ballet. But it wasn't drawn any attention to the drama acting, even in a very great degree is considered as existence of limiting drama actor's creativity. In fact, formalized patterns affect dramatic performances from various aspects, and it also brings important approaches for drama actors to acquire acting skills. In particular, the representative Shakespeare's performances, whether it is the original Shakespeare's repertory company which relies on formalized patterns to improve their productivity of actors;or the modern Shakespearean actors' practice that sets up technical standards according to specific formalized patterns, all benefit from codification to a great extent. From the accumulation of the "pre-expressive" patterns of basic acting techniques,to the "expressive" codification of performances, either it is a highly condensed traditional performance with a intense form which pays attention to "external skills",or a modern drama close to the real life which depend upon actors' psychological "internal skills",both require codification to shape characters and images on the stage. Not only we need to enhance the role of formalized patterns as practical tools that improve actor's techniques;but also, from a new perspective, take the positive significance of performing codification in defining the professional ethics of drama actors.
