Buddhism idioms are the products of Buddhism ideology and culture spread in China, which refer to idioms created by using Buddhist ideology and culture as external conditions or opportunities, using Chinese vocabulary materials and combination rules,as well as Chinese idioms that have been evolving Buddhist color.Buddhism idioms are an integral part of Chinese idioms which expanding the number of Chinese idioms and enriching Chinese expressions and means. We collects 1633 Buddhism idioms and establishes a comprehensive corpus for each one of them by means of literature reading and comprehensively review the large-scale dictionaries such as the Chinese Dictionary,A Dictionary of the Origin and Evolution of Chinese Idioms, and the Zen Dictionary. This paper focuses on the historical process of Buddhism idioms, and combines the knowledge of linguistics to discuss the generation and evolution of Buddhism idioms from the perspective of cultural interaction and reveal the regularity and particularity of its evolution process.Deepening the study of idioms in Buddhism is one of the important tasks in the study of Chinese lexical history. This paper mainly includes three parts:The first is the formation of Buddhist idioms. The traditional research focuses on the origin and evolution of the idioms of Buddhism, and according to the characteristics of Buddhism culture, statically classifies the idioms of Buddhism. From the perspective of word-formation,this paper examines how Buddhist idioms used Chinese vocabulary materials to construct new forms, what processes and stages they experienced, and how they eventuallyevolved into common Chinese idioms in the context of cultural interaction and integration.According to the different forms of formation, the generation of Buddhism idioms is divided into six major categories, which consist of fourteen sub-categories: “Online generation,two-tone combination, structural transformation, transformation of Buddhist scriptures, metaphorical solidification, and Buddhism inherent”.The spread of Buddhism culture is the external motivation for the formation of Buddhism idioms, which plays a role within the scope of Chinese customary thinking and rules.Investigating the generation of Buddhist idioms,we can discuss the influence of Buddhist cultural communication on Chinese vocabulary system from the perspective of lexical methods. The second is an investigation of the changes in the forms of idioms in Buddhism. The formal change of idioms is the temporary transformation or creation of idioms by language users according to their expression needs. It is the product and expression of the interaction between social culture and language, and it is also the result of people observing things from different perspectives.According to the results of the changes, this paper is divided into two categories: one is “deformation without meaning change”.Such changes are mainly the replacement of individual constituent elements(usually synonymous, synonymous or semantically related morphemes),sometimes the adjustment of the combination order,or the omission of the different forms of the same idiom. This paper refers to the class of deformation without meaning change as "variant",and combines relevant research results and specific examples, systematically summarizes the formation methods, formation reasons of idiom variants, examines the formation of idiom variants and social culture and language, and the relationshipbetween development and its characteristics of the times. The other type is “deformation and meaning change”,that is the semantics of formal changes change. The result of this type of change is the new concept of a new form of word, which essentially produces different words. There is a close relationship between the new form and its meaning and the original form. Therefore,This paper refers to this form change as “differentiation”,and the result of differentiation is the new idiom. At the same time, combined with specific examples and related research results, the types, causes and generation methods of idiom differentiation are systematically summarized. The third is the semantic evolution of the idioms of Buddhism. The semantic evolution of Buddhism idioms conforms to the general law of the evolution of Chinese idioms. However, due to the particularity of Buddhism's ideology and culture,it also shows distinct unique characteristics. This paper analyzes a large number of examples, and believes that social development makes people's thinking mode and ideas change. It is the root cause of the semantic evolution of Buddhism idioms;context change is the direct driving force of the semantic evolution of Buddhism idioms, and the traditional explanation is the catalyst. The desalination, shedding, and gradual secularization of Buddhist culture are the general characteristics of the semantic evolution of Buddhism idioms, and it is a trend of developing to the literal combination.Due to the mysterious color of Buddhism culture, the semantic development of the idioms of many ideologies of the imaginary spirits has evolved from abstract to concrete.
