With the continuous expansion and extension of the global value chain system,China's manufacturing industry has become more and more embedded in the global value chain. In this process,China's manufacturing industry has not only realized the rapid growth of its production and export, but also gained a certain degree of competitiveness, and the quality and structure of its products have been constantly improved. However, relying on labor cost advantage to be embedded into global value chain makes it possible for Chinese enterprises to be locked up at the lower end,and with the deterioration of internal and external environment starting from the new century,it is urgent for enterprises to improve their status of global value chain to strive for survival space and seek in-depth development.Previous researches on imported intermediate products have been limited to the discussion of their influence on productivity, and under the background that global value chain increasingly become the mainstream form of international work division,it is necessary to discuss the role that imported intermediate products, which is the carrier and the basic way of realization of global value chain, played in promoting the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing industry. This thesis tries to link global value chain updating to the status of global value on the basis of summarizing the performance of global value chain updating, and further analyzes the mechanism of imported intermediate products promoting the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing Industry. Then, based on data of both sector level and enterprise level, this thesis investigates the effect that imported intermediated products have on the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing industry from various angles. The whole article is divided into nine chapters:Chapter 1 is the introduction. This chapter describes the research background and significance, research objectives, research methods and innovation.Chapter 2 is the literature review. This chapter firstly reviews the theoretical and empirical studies on the effect of intermediate product imports on productivity, laying a foundation for the subsequent mechanism analysis and research framework.Secondly, this chapter summarizes the documentation of evolution of the concept and the measurement methods of global value chain, the type of global value chain upgrading and the features of each type, which shows why we should select the trade value added method to measure the status of global value chain and the necessity of examining the status of global value chain from various angles. Finally, this chapter documents the factors affecting the status of global value chain, indicating that there is still a gap in the related research for the imported intermediate products literature.Chapter 3 is the theoretical analysis. This chapter summarizes the characteristics of different types of global value chain upgrading, and through the elaboration of these characteristics, links the promotion of the status of global value chain with the performance of the production end and the product end in the existing literature, and analyzes the mechanism of imported intermediate product affecting the status of global value chain,so as to prepare for the later empirical test.Chapter 4 is about data collation and main index measurement. The empirical test of this paper involves two sets of complex data and the measurement of several indicators. This chapter introduces the basic information, the methods and steps of collating and merging these two sets of data, and the calculation of main indicators.Chapter 5 is the description of the situation and characteristics. This chapter begins with an analysis of the situation and characteristics of the export and the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing industry based on the value of exports and the domestic value-added,and then the situation and characteristics of the quality, varieties and technical complexity of export products,as well as those of the imported intermediate products are also described.Chapter 6,chapter 7 and chapter 8 are the empirical tests.Chapter 6 firstly examines the effect of imported intermediate products have on the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing industry at sector level, and examines the effect of imported intermediate products on the quality, varieties, technical complexity and product transformation of exported products at product level, then examines the effect of heterogeneity. On the basis of chapter 6,chapter 7 takes total factor productivity as the reason for the promotion of the status of global value chain and examines the effect of imported intermediate product on it.This chapter firstly checks the treatment effect of imported intermediate products on the total factor productivity of enterprises and examines the effect of imported intermediate products on the total factor productivity of the enterprises which actually imports intermediate products, then extends the test to the effect of the imported intermediate products of the industry which the enterprise belongs to and its upstream industries and the effect that imported intermediate products have on productivity through industrial agglomeration.Chapter 8 is an extension of this thesis. This chapter extends the self-selection effect in existing literature to the three main representation of product updating, that is,to test whether enterprises imports intermediate products in order to obtain higher product quality, more complex technology and produce more varieties of products, and further examines whether the behavior of importing intermediate products of enterprises is in line with rationality.Chapter 9 is the conclusion, enlightenment and research prospect.Through the research of this thesis, the following conclusions are reached:First, imported intermediate products promote the status of global value chain and export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry, and the quality and the diversification of exported products. The reason behind is that imported intermediate products improve production process and resources allocation, hence promoting the total factor productivity of enterprises. The way imported intermediate products improve the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing industry is mainly by promoting the upgrading of enterprises' products, but there are limitations in promoting higher level global value chain upgrading.Second, the effect that imported intermediate products have on the quality of exported products and the total factor productivity of enterprises is larger in hightechnology industries than in low-tech industries,in non-processing trade than in processing trade and in state owned enterprises than foreign enterprises.Third, the effect of imported intermediate products on the improvement of total factor productivity of enterprises is limited to those enterprises which actually imports intermediate products. There are no technology spillover effect and the effect produced by inter-enterprise correlation and competition. Also, there is no effect produced through agglomeration. These conclusions have the following implications:First, they affirm the basic state policy of China's opening-up and the effect of the policies implemented since China's accession to the WTO to promote mutual benefit and encourage imports, indicating that imported intermediate products have played an important role in promoting the development and the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing Industry. If China's manufacturing industry is to further transfer to provide high-quality of high-tech products and enhance the export competitiveness of domestic enterprises,it is necessary to continue to implement the strategy of expanding imports.Second, imported intermediate products have limitations in promoting the status of global value chain of China's manufacturing enterprises. If China relies too much on imports,it will be difficult to realize the further development and the promotion of export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry in the new environment in the future.Third, two problems can be further derived from the limitations: one is the evaluation criteria of low-end lock-up,that is,whether it is reasonable to judge whether low-end lock-up occurs based on productivity, and whether it is appropriate to take promoting functional upgrading and chain upgrading as the evaluation basis for the non-existence of low-end lock-up besides productivity. The second is the source of the limitations, that is,whether the limitations are related to some situations of our country or the enterprise itself. The answer to this question will help promote the development and export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry through embeddedness into global value chain,as well as help construct China's internal and external value chains.Fourth,China has a good foundation to build an internal value chain without relying on global value chain.Relevant parties should make top-level design, strengthen the guidance of enterprises in industrial entry and exit, optimize the operating environment, and promote win-win cooperation in China,so as to lay a stronger foundation for the manufacturing industry and make the production system completer and more integrated.
