With the intensification of the market competition and the rapid change of the external environment,the influence of alliance portfolio on the survival and development of enterprises becomes more and more prominent.Alliance portfolio not only expand the breadth of resources,but also enhance the depth of resources.It is an important guarantee for sustainable competitive advantage.However,the potential to realize the value of alliance portfolio depends on how to manage it.In recent years,scholars have studied the components and drivers of alliance portfolio management capabilities.However,the progress between them is not clear.This paper argues that understanding the mechanism of alliance portfolio management capabilities still needs a more comprehensive and detailed framework,and we should further explore the mechanism how alliance portfolio management capabilities improve the performance of focal firm.It is noteworthy that starting from the ambidexterity theory,there are widespread different cooperation activities in the alliance portfolio,that is,co-exploitation and co-exploration.co-exploitation deepens on the existing knowledge,improve the existing technology and improve the existing products Performance.co-exploration is to explore new knowledge,develop new technologies,create new products.These two different cooperative activities may help us better understand the alliance portfolio management capabilities to improve the performance of focal firm.Therefore,based on the transaction cost theory,resource based theory,resource dependence theory and social network theory,this study constructs a conceptual model of the relationship between alliance portfolio management capability,ambidextrous cooperation and the performance of focal firm.Then we deeply explain the differences in the effect of different dimensions of alliance portfolio management on ambidextrous cooperation and the moderating mechanism of organizational status between them.After that we analyzes the mechanism of ambidextrous cooperation and specific models on the financial performance and innovation performance of focal firm and explores the moderating role of environmental dynamics between them.Subsequently,field research was conducted in three regions of Shaanxi,Sichuan and Chongqing,and 340 valid questionnaires were finally obtained.The theoretical assumptions made in this study were tested by statistical methods such as factor analysis,correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression.Finally,most of the assumptions made in this study have been empirically tested and supported.Through theoretical analysis and empirical test,the main conclusions of this study are as follows:At first,there are differences in the impact of different dimensions of alliance portfolio management capabilities(partnering proactiveness capability,alliance governance capability,portfolio coordination capability)on ambidextrous cooperation(co-exploitation,co-exploration).partnering proactiveness capability Partner selection ability positively impacts co-exploitation and co-exploration.Alliance governance capability has a different impact on the co-exploitation and co-exploration.Specifically alliance governance capability has a positively impact on the co-exploitation,but it has a negatively impact on the co-exploration.Portfolio coordination capability positively impacts co-exploitation and co-exploration.Besides that,Research conclusions confirm that organizational status is an important moderating factor between alliance portfolio management capabilities and ambidextrous cooperation.At second,the mechanism of ambidextrous cooperation(co-exploitation,co-exploration)and dual cooperation modes(balanced ambidextrous cooperation,combined ambidextrous cooperation)mechanism on firm performance(financial performance,innovation performance)difference.the dynamic of environment has a significant positive moderating role between the balanced ambidextrous cooperation model,the combined ambidextrous cooperation and the innovation performance of focal firm.The main innovations of this study are as follows: Firstly,the conclusions of this study reveal that there are differences in the impact of different dimensions of alliance portfolio management capabilities on ambidextrous cooperation.This not only expands the theoretical basis of the alliance portfolio research,but also understand and explain how to effectively manage the alliance portfolio is of great significance.Secondly,for the academic community,although organizational status is a relatively familiar concept,few scholars in China have studied their impact on the enterprise.The conclusion of this paper enriches and expands the research scope of organizational status.Thirdly,the research of ambidexterity theory started from the internal organization,and scholars discussed the antecedent variables,the moderating variables and the relationship with the firm performance.The conclusion of this paper not only expands the application range of ambidexterity research,but also further verifies the relationship with performance.
