Abstract/Summary:
Franz Schubert's Winterreise is one of the major works of the German Lied literature and holds an important place in the modern repertoire. This dissertation presents a study edition for singers and collaborative pianists. It is targeted at performers who have the interest to learn in more detail about the poetry and the musical settings of the Erste Abteilung ("First Part"), covering the twelve songs that were composed to Wilhelm Muller's poetry published in 1823 and composed by Franz Schubert in 1827.;The first volume contains general observations about the music of the complete song cycle, a poetic inventory (concordances) for all poems, a historical essay, and detailed poetic and musical analyses for the first twelve songs of Winterreise. The second volume contains an introduction to the score with an examination of aspects of performance practice. A chapter on contemporary German diction is included. The diction chapter illustrates where American instruction diverges from German practice, correcting some essential misconceptions prevalent in the American literature. An authoritative transcription reference for German text into the International Phonetic Alphabet is included.;The musical edition combines the Urtext that is derived from the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe with a transcription of the lyrics into the International Phonetic Alphabet.
