Abstract/Summary:
This quasi-experimental design sought to explore differences in participants' explicit judgments of interracial Black-White married couples versus mono-racial couples, in terms of marital adjustment. It was hypothesized that participants' would view Black-White marriages differently then mono-racial marriages. Participants included 120 students from liberal arts colleges in the Pacific Northwest. Participants were presented with a scripted marital conflict and were then asked to complete the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), as if they were either the husband or wife in the marriage described. The pictorial description of the married couple varied in terms of racial composition of the couple. The four pictures used were all of attractive men and women appearing between the ages of 30-35. Results failed to substantiate the three hypotheses that stated differences would exist between conditions due to the racial manipulation. Reasons for insignificant findings, recommendations for future research, and implications were discussed.
