Language planning and bilingual education in the Philippines: A historical approach

Abstract/Summary:
The problem here deals with the historical development of English used in the Philippines and Filipino, the national language of the Philippines and tries to discuss: (1) why English is used as the medium of instruction in all schools and universities, (2) what the importance of English usage is in educational system in relation to students social life and future opportunities.;The framework from this study is a (1) qualitative research; (2) using historical approach based on the chronological events and ethnographic research, which include (3) social change in the Philippine society. The research is synthesized, abstracted and explored from theories and scientific thinking in order to solve the problem.;Sources of data may be classified into two main groups: primary sources, which are the life blood of historical research; and secondary sources, which may be used in the absence of, or to supplement, primary data.;Data gathered from records and documents were carefully evaluated so as to attest their worth for the purpose of this particular study. After the document authenticity has been established, the next task is to evaluate the accuracy and the worth of the data contained therein.;The main objectives are to (1) look at educational and language policies and see up to what extent these language policies and programs and programs in educational system are influenced by English presence in Philippines society; (2) to find out the present status of the English language among Filipinos, as the result of bilingual educational system from 1974 until 1980s.;This research attempts to analyze how American influences language policies and programs of the Philippines in terms of educational system and was institutionalized within that system. The researcher also tried to find out the present status of the English language among Filipinos, as the result of bilingual educational system from 1974 until 1980s.;After ten years, various data and sources found the BEP resulted big dysfunction, caused confusion and deterioration of English among students.
