Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative exploratory case study examined the impact Situational LeadershipRTM has on followers in the military. Many studies have examined Situational LeadershipRTM, to date, but no current research has identified how Situational LeadershipRTM impacts followers. This study focused on how the primary Situational LeadershipRTM style and adaptability level of military leaders were perceived by senior enlisted military service members' and if these primary Situational LeadershipRTM styles and adaptability levels did impact a follower's behavior, mission accomplishment, job satisfaction and cohesive working environment using an exploratory case study methodology. Using multiple data gathering techniques and instruments, this two-phase study explored the military leaders' levels of adaptability (rated numerically on a scale 0-36) and primary Situational LeadershipRTM style (delegating, participating, selling, and telling) and how they influence senior enlisted military personnel's behaviors toward task completion. Military leaders completed a 12-item Leadership Effectiveness and Adaptability Description (LEAD) Self-questionnaire that contained narrative questions. Senior enlisted personnel completed a 20-item Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ-XII) questionnaire that assessed task and relationship behaviors about their primary leaders. Followers also responded to interview questions about perceptions that effect their task and relationship behaviors when tasked by the primary military leader they initially indicated. Findings concluded that leaders were oriented toward selling and delegating as their primary style of leadership and senior enlisted military personnel have a misconception about their leaders' primary style of leadership. Subsequently, the followers did report an accurate recording on how adaptable their leaders were when they use Situational LeadershipRTM in their current environment.
