This study highlights the importance of using critical education methods in art education that services students of color from working-class backgrounds. It presents a Funds of Knowledge approach in arts education, developed from the Latin-American game known as La Loteria. This study brings together elements of Critical Pedagogy, Funds of Knowledge, and Critical Race Theory to develop what the author identifies as the practice of Creative Resistance. The study presents the value of art-based critical education, and the importance of developing sociopolitical awareness in working-class students of color through a relevant curriculum, student-teacher relationships of shared household cultural knowledge, and socio-economic awareness. This research serves as a model and key to draw from students' own cultural knowledge to build their resistance to institutional and historical limitations. |
