Abstract/Summary:
This study presents the perspectives of one hundred and thirty teens from the Vineland School district regarding teen pregnancy. The goal was to understand how teens view teen pregnancy, sexual behaviors and their perspectives about what needs to be done to generate a decline in the number of teens getting pregnant. These perspectives were gathered through interview and survey instruments.;The study identified literature pertaining to the theoretical frameworks of teen pregnancy, teen sexual behavior, causes of teen pregnancy, results of teen pregnancy and prevention and reduction of teen pregnancy. This information was linked with the perspectives of the teens utilized in this study.;The research findings indicated that teens still believe that feeling they are in love is one of the leading causes of teenage pregnancy. Also, the belief that it won't happen to them is attributed to the cause of teen pregnancy. Almost half of the teens in this study have already had sex even though they indicated that STD's, HIV/AIDS are a deterrent for participation in sexual activity. The research indicated that teens feel peer pressure about their involvement in sexual activity, and are less likely to be proud of being a virgin. However, the findings indicated that the teens themselves were the decider regarding their participation in sexual activity. The findings indicated a need to begin sex education at an earlier age and grade. The findings also demonstrate the need for better communication between parents and their children about sex and contraceptives. The teens indicated a need to have inexpensive contraceptives readily accessible, and covered by insurance to help in the reduction of teen pregnancy.;The results indicated that some of the participant's perspectives on teen pregnancy were consistent with the literature. The information gathered proved to be enlightening and informative. It was not only helpful for the researcher in answering the research questions, but also in recommendations for future research.
