Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to explore why high performing strategic business units of Apex consistently achieve defined key performance indicators relative to physical facility size, membership size, and the total number of fitness department employees at 20 high performing and independently-owned Apex-licensed facilities in the central United States. Findings revealed that attitudes, beliefs, and opinions of fitness managers related to why the commercial health and fitness facility in which they worked consistently achieved defined key performance indicators for weight management program and nutritional supplement sales. This study explored the use of benchmarking and the role of the Balanced Scorecard within Apex-licensed facilities. The study also revealed themes related to the utilization of a formal performance management system, the implementation of best practice strategies, and organizational leadership.
