This research is a non-experimental causal comparative study of the overall academic achievement, defined in this study as grade point average, attendance, and behavior, of high school wrestling participants in-season versus out-of-season. The literature shows conflicting evidence as to the benefit of athletic participation for students' overall academic achievement. Thus this study sought to provide further evidence as to the impact of athletics on achievement. Ex post facto data were gathered and analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA to compare the academic performance of wrestlers in-season versus out-of-season. The results of this study indicate that wrestlers attend school significantly more often during their season of competition than out-of-season. Additionally, while not statistically significant, wrestlers tallied higher grade point averages and lower numbers of discipline referrals in-season as well. |
