Abstract/Summary:
This study utilized phenomenological research methods to seek and investigate how the lived experiences of four middle-aged women may have impacted their use of tobacco and their ability to be successful in tobacco dependency treatment. Through the use of semistructured interviews, this investigator was able to gain a more complex understanding of the psychosocial, psychological, physical, and discursive factors that contribute to these individuals' choices concerning their use of tobacco and their ability to terminate said use. Through the use of phenomenological methodology, the outcome of this study will enrich the understanding counselors, tobacco treatment specialists and others have as to possible issues to explore during a tobacco dependence treatment episode; and contribute to the scarce body of literature that is available regarding the lived experiences of this population.
