Abstract/Summary:
This research encompassed a single case study that examined the condition of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in seeking to pursue a green economy. Thus, as a nation that is nearly dependent on its natural resource wealth for its economic wealth, primarily through oil exploitation, the research sought to answer the following principal research question: How can Equatorial Guinea transition to a green economy from its current state of natural resource driven unsustainable growth? Additionally, in order to develop a clear answer to the principal research question, the following sub-questions were established: What actions has Equatorial Guinea taken to pursue and establish a green economy? What challenges does Equatorial Guinea face in seeking to transition to a green economy? What opportunities does Equatorial Guinea have in seeking to transition to a green economy?;Thus, the research concluded that continued dependence on its hydrocarbons for economic wealth has put the Republic of Equatorial Guinea at severe risk of economic uncertainty due to volatility in oil prices and declining production. In addition, the research found that while barriers to transitioning to a green economy as well as improving social indicators were found to exist in several forms, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea has already made significant efforts to advance towards a path of sustainable development and an eventual green economy.
