Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to explore the relationship between Texas superintendents' perception of their emotional intelligence/leader responsibilities and the district's performance rating based on the state's accountability system. The emotional intelligence competencies are considered to be the factors that contribute to leaders being extraordinary rather than average. The superintendency of today is complex. It encompasses so many competing issues, and is measured by high standards tied to accountability. The superintendent's role has changed from one of being a highly visible administrator with vision, skills, and knowledge to lead in a new and multifaceted world.; Using the survey method, data were collected from 261 Texas superintendents. Descriptive statistics were compiled on data for all superintendent respondents. The statistical techniques used to determine relationships included one way between subjects Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), the Mann-Whitney U Test, Pearson's Correlation, Chi-square and cross-tabulations.; Results of the study show a positive relationship between emotional intelligence/leader responsibilities and a superintendent's success. For superintendent preparatory programs, these findings may provide information for improvement of the program.
