| The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of sand tray therapy based on the tenants of Adlerian theory. This research reviewed the use of sand tray in the traditional Jungian model and compared it with a new method of sand tray therapy for the Adlerian therapist. Through the investigation, the new model was identified and practical applications were reviewed through ten case studies. Overall, the results from the theoretical research indicate that sand tray therapy is a viable option for the Adlerian practitioner. This form of sand tray therapy results in a different approach from the traditional Jungian model. Adlerian sand tray methods can be utilized for therapy or for assessment. This model can be utilized to gather life style information from clients and can be conducted through a non-directed approach or a directed approach. Adlerian sand tray can be utilized with individuals of all ages, couples, siblings or entire families depending upon the therapy focus. Adlerian sand tray can be utilized as a sole technique throughout the course of therapy or in conjunction with other tools. This research will greatly contribute to the literature on Individual Psychology because it will increase the tools available to Adlerian therapists by adding a new technique. It will also assist Adlerian therapists who are drawn to the use of sand tray by clarifying why it is useful in Adlerian therapy. |
