| The evolutionary status of Vietnamese women from ancient times to the modern day has been of great interest for many Vietnamese as well as foreign scholars. Historically, Vietnamese society functioned in a matrilineal guideline; however, as time progressed and with the introduction of the Confucian system of governance and Chinese culture, the power of men overshadowed women's dominance.;The gender gap between Vietnamese men and women is one of subtlety. One could ask the question: Why do men and women behave or function the way they do? The immediate response would be, "Because culture dictates us to do so." Hence, culture is the quintessential factor in aiding this process; therefore, the Vietnamese use culture as a rationale to explain and justify their behaviors. Cai luong (renovated theater) belongs to a great tradition of the theatrical culture in Vietnamese society. The authors who created these dramas were hoping to provide an appropriate answer to the members of the society that clinched onto the culture as an excuse for their actions. |
