This dissertation utilizes a methodological framework termed integrated rhetorical methodology to analyze one specific young adult narrative, Smallville, for thematic patterns in the representation of relationships. This work combines rhetorical theory, cultural studies, and relational communication. After outlining the Smallville narrative for readers unfamiliar with the series, I argue that utilizing an inductive approach to research called integrated rhetorical methodology is the theoretical and methodological frame most appropriate for this study. Integrated rhetorical methodology requires balanced investigation of multiple communication sites, and I spend significant time discussing the way in which grounded theory, rhetorical studies, and cultural studies inform this methodological choice. Analysis chapters examine the representation of family, friendship, and homoeroticism. The final chapter examines the accomplishments and contributions of this work with respect to the methodology and this particular case study. It also outlines directions for future research in media studies.
