The original text of this report derives from Chapter One and Two of Translation Studies:An Integrated Approach,a piece of academic work by Mary Snell-Homby.The book is divided into five chapters,describing recent concepts as well as approaches in the field of translation theories and linguistics as a whole,which is of great importance for practical translation and analysis of literary works,besides,the whole book enjoys the characteristics of precise language,clear logic and complicated structure.This report introduces the background information of the original text and analyzes the language features of the original text and the difficulties during the process of translation,under the functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida to present a whole translated piece.The writer of this report tries to guarantee the authenticity and accuracy of the translation while conforms to readers' taste of the translation piece from the perspectives of vocabulary,sentence and discourse,aiming at arousing empathy among readers as the original text does.This report is divided into five chapters:Chapter One is the description of the translation task,which mainly includes a brief background introduction of the task.Chapter Two is the description of the translation process,which illustrates translation preparation,translation procedures,and post-preparation matters.Chapter Three is the translation theory framework,which includes introduction of the theory and its guidance to the translation.Chapter Four is case analyses,which are made up of the key and difficult points in the practice,discussion of translation strategies and the corresponding solutions from the perspectives of words,sentences and discourse.Chapter Five is the part of conclusion,which is mainly concerned with thoughts about the unsettled problems and outlook for further translation.The last part consists of references and appendices:the original text,translation work,glossaries and list of names.This report elaborates the practical guidance of functional equivalence theory to academic texts through actual cases,and gives the corresponding translation approaches.The writer gets a better understanding of functional equivalence theory and actual translation practice and gains precious experience as well,hoping that it would be helpful to the translation of academic texts.
