Predicting recidivism variables in a partial psychiatric hospitalization setting

This study identified recidivism predictor variables in a partial psychiatric hospitalization program (PPHP). Specifically, it examined a combination of demographic and clinical variables in an attempt to determine which variables correlated most closely with patients who returned to partial hospital and/or inpatient treatment within eighteen months of discharge from a partial hospital. The identification of variables most closely linked with symptom relapse can be used to inform more appropriate treatment targets, aftercare resources and treatment recommendations. In addition, this information helps assess whether the goal of hospital diversion is being accomplished by this particular PPHP. Data was gathered from 200 charts. Specific attention was given to the connection between recidivism and previous admission history, previous lengths of stay, social supports, and diagnosis. A combination of chi-square and correlational analyses isolated predictor variables to determine which of these were associated with various outcomes of PPHP treatment including no return to treatment within 18 months, one or more returns to treatment within 18 months and direct transfers from PPHP to inpatient care. The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and psychotic disorders are found to correlate highly with recidivism. Specific treatment interventions to address recidivism rates are proposed.
