Abstract/Summary:
This study followed a two-phase sequential transformative research model to evaluate attitudes of Community College Library Directors toward the library of the future. A survey, distributed to 155 community college library directors yielded 84 responses, which allowed the researcher to identify key issues which concern the directors. In depth personal interviews were then conducted with 15 directors. The two-step approach produced the following key results, as the Directors predicted that: (1) the library will continue to occupy space on the college campus for the foreseeable future; (2) the evolution and operationalization of emerging technologies in libraries has started and will gain momentum in order to accommodate the changing needs of all constituents, those on campus and those served remotely; (3) the Information Commons/Learning Commons model is one of many models which have been, or will be, adopted as the library of the future; (4) the functions, responsibilities, required skills, and job titles and descriptions of library staffs have changed significantly in conjunction with technological innovations; and (5) cost constraints have been, and will continue to be, a major factor in the transition from paper to electronic resources; however these constraints will eventually be overcome through partnerships with external entities.; This research suggests that technology is not only the primary catalyst for these changes, but also the major impetus for changing the underlying culture of the community college library environment.
