Abstract/Summary:
The research question was whether the psychosocial adjustment of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren is related to available and utilized social support.; Grandparents who had assumed primary responsibility for raising one or more of their grandchildren (N = 102) completed a survey questionnaire assessing their perceptions of available and utilized social support, three psychosocial adjustment measures (subjective well-being, depression, and anxiety), and a background questionnaire. Participation in a peer support group for caregiving grandparents was also related positively to each of the adjustment measures. These relationships did not differ as a function of the respondent's self-reported ethnic/cultural group identification. Results were interpreted as consistent with theories of stress and coping.
