Abstract/Summary:
Based on in-depth interviews with 11 teenagers who were suffering from depression in psychiatric units of a Y hospital in Kunming of China, this study found three dimensions in the analysis of parent-child relationship: emotion, power and interpersonal by using qualitative research methods. The research discovered three characteristics in this process: (1) the power dimension had changed considerably. As the child growing up there're more struggles for power with their parents, conflicts will increase between the child and parents; (2) the emotion dimension had changed very little, The relationship between them had become still cool and closed; (3) the interpersonal dimension hardly changed. They always rarely communicated with others. When the child reached adolescence, depressed teenagers felt "non-intimate" with their parents, because of the obvious apartness of emotion, the loss of communication, and drastic struggles for self-determination. The process how the depressed teenagers felt "non-intimate" with their parents has been argued.;First of all, this study aimed to discuss the internal and external impact on the youth perspective. There are three dimensions: the growth of adolescent individuals, the formation of their interpersonal relationships and the social transformation.;Secondly it has also analyzed the main causes of adolescent depression, including individual imperfection of one's character, less active interactions between child and parents, and the student and teachers, and among the companions, and the influence of social transformation.;Hence, the key concept of "accumulated-loss" is proposed by this research which means the loss of love in growth, the self-esteem in personal relationships, the values of life in social reform, and energy in physiological functions, etc.;It was also argued the relations between parent-child relationships and adolescent depression. This research showed not only bad relationships cause the disease but also the depression may also improve the relationships as well. Finally, the research offered some valuable suggestions for the prevention and rehabilitation of depression from the perspective of social work.
