Abstract/Summary:
Leadership continues to be a domain of great research interest within educational administration studies. Because all coaches are in a leadership position, one would expect to see abundant research about the leadership of coaching. In past leadership studies, researches indicate that leadership is a complicated process that involves traits, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.;This researcher sought to compare assistant college soccer coaches and head college soccer coaches across the different NCAA divisions when the respondents are categorized by role (assistant coach and head coach), and divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Division I, II, III), and separately analyzing both perceptions for and expectations of, the extent of the head coaches' leadership behavior. The Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) was administered to a sample of college head coaches and assistant coaches from each of the three divisions of the NCAA.;There were no significant differences in the perceived and expected leader behavior of head college soccer coaches. However, there were remarkable agreements between head coaches and assistant coaches in both perceived and expected leader behavior across all NCAA divisions and between assistant coaches and head coaches.;College soccer has grown into a profession over the last 25 years with head coaches and assistant coaches learning the same specialized knowledge, common procedures, and methods. College soccer head coaches view themselves and are viewed by their assistant coaches as leaders who demonstrate a high level of initiating structure and consideration for their athletes.
