An evaluation of a leadership development program for intercollegiate wrestling coaches

Abstract/Summary:
The overarching purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of two online modules, comprising part of a coaching leadership course, in achieving the course objectives as defined by key stakeholders. In addition the study aimed to examine coaches' opinions regarding the ease and effectiveness of an online learning environment. This was accomplished in three phases. First, in Phase One the researcher conducted qualitative interviews with key stakeholders to identify the outcomes and objectives of the intervention broadly, and of two of the online modules, specifically. The second phase aimed to examine the effectiveness of the two online modules in increasing knowledge, intended use, and actual use of material covered in the modules. Due to unforeseen circumstances in obtaining and retaining a large enough control or comparison group, a single group longitudinal design had to be employed in Phase Two. Phase three was designed to examine the intervention group coaches' perspectives regarding the ease and utility of the online video format. The stakeholders in Phase One reported that their program goals were of both a macro and micro nature. For example, they hoped that the coaches would, on a macro level: develop a broader awareness of all that their coaching role includes, approach the coaching role similar to that of a CEO, be willing to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, etcetera. On a micro level, for example, the Phase One participants hoped that the coaches would: improve communication skills, develop a vision for their program, and bring in assistant coaches or interns to supplement their weaknesses. In Phase Two, causality determinations were limited, however, results indicated that the online modules effectively increased knowledge and intended use of the material covered. Finally, Phase Three demonstrated that the coaches perceived that the online modules met their needs, were easy to use, and were an effective way of delivering that style of leadership content.
