Abstract/Summary:
This study focuses on middle school principal leadership of instructional change as technology is integrated into the middle school curriculum. Technology integration occurs when technology becomes an incorporated part of instruction; in a classroom lesson in which technology is integrated, technology becomes a tool used to deepen student learning. As an integral part of the change to technology integration in classroom instruction, middle school principals must understand how technology can positively impact student achievement. Principals support technology integration through their actions; in showing a passion for technology, creating a shared vision for technology, and helping teachers develop technology integration skills through professional development that builds expertise over time promotes strong technology integration.;This study centered around three questions: (1) What change practices are middle school principals utilizing in the integration of technology into classroom instruction? (2) What professional development practices are being utilized in middle schools to effect change to technology integration in classroom instruction? (3) How do middle school teachers view the change efforts of the middle school principal in the integration of technology into middle school instruction? This study used case study methodology to collect qualitative and quantitative data to study the role of the middle school principal as a leader of change as technology is integrated into the middle school curriculum.;Current research states that, in order to affect change, professional learning communities should strongly function in schools. After analyzing the results of teacher responses to a questionnaire, the principal of the middle school studied was correct in stating that the professional learning community is in its early stages. To facilitate the change to technology integration in classroom instruction in the middle school studied, the principal should increase efforts in shared decision making in the area of technology, professional development activities that address the meaningful integration of technology into the curriculum should be provided, the principal should continue working alongside teachers in the professional learning community, hardware and software should be obtained and maintained, and experienced teachers should be included in the professional learning community as the change to technology integration is made.
