Abstract/Summary:
Increasing globalization and movement across national boundaries has created an interest in exploring international standards in education. This is true in nursing education as well. Historically, most issues regarding the quality of nursing education have been addressed at the local level.; The purpose of the study is to explore the tacit knowledge of nurse educators and discover the means by which standards in baccalaureate nursing education are formulated, implemented and enforced at the local level. This cross national study examines the structure, process, and outcomes in relation to context and culture. The focus is on North America and includes a sample from Ontario, Canada; Minnesota, USA; and Mexico City, Mexico.; Department head, faculty member, and key informant interviews were conducted at each site. A cultural/language interpreter assisted as needed. All interviews were tape recorded. Contextual and cultural information was obtained from the interviewees, the literature, and by direct observation.; The data uncovered was organized according to a conceptual model designed for the study. An analysis was conducted to examine the efficacy of the model.
